Black is Green Pty Ltd

Black is Green Pty Ltd (BiG) is a private Australian company based in Mackay, Central Queensland. Engineering and technical support for BiG is provided by JJA Process Engineers of Mackay and by selected manufacturing partners and contractors.

BiG was established early in 2009 specifically to develop a fast pyrolysis process for the conversion of “waste biomass” (or perhaps we should say “under-utilised biomass resources”) to charcoal products. BiG commenced by designing and patenting a fast rotary hearth process to meet the need for on-site biomass charcoal production with a fully mobile pyrolysis plant.

Our initial interest was in processing broad acre crop waste (especially sugar cane trash). However, it soon became apparent that other important sources of biomass could be processed too. These include municipal green waste, orchard wastes, forestry wastes, sawdust, material from bush fire hazard reduction and livestock manure (especially from poultry farms, piggeries and animal feed lots).

BiGchar technology has significant applications to waste management, energy production from wastes, charcoal production and the creation of substitutes for fossil fuels. BiGchar technologies can be used to manufacture many varieties of charcoal including Biochar, fuel charcoal and activated carbon.

BiG has developed a technology to thermally process a wide range of biomass feedstocks to charcoal and energy. Add on processes allow the product range to extend to torrefied biomass, char slurry fuels, activated carbon and electricity. BiG is now commercialising its technology and is actively seeking host sites in Australia. Typically such sites will have plentiful biomass resource, appropriate local authority development approval and environmental approvals for commercial operation.
